Centre for Advanced Nuclear Systems – Post Irradiation Examination Shielded Facility

Project Overview

  • Work included demolition within an existing facility, preparation of the facility for its new purpose, fabrication and installation of the PIE shielded research hot cells and associated equipment, connection of the hot cells to external systems and utilities, and finishing the work space surrounding the hot cells
  • Renovation of the existing facility to receive new ‘Hot Cell’ equipment
  • Removal and reinstatement of 4’ thick concrete wall to facilitate installation, new mezzanine, and extensive Mechanical and Electrical changes to interconnect with equipment
  • Fabricate and install new ‘Hot Cell ‘equipment worth over $6m. Including shielded windows, manipulator arms and High Density concrete
  • Construction of 8’x45’x11′ high Hot Cell constructed within 23’x59’x20′ high existing room; Hot Cell walls constructed of 19″ of High Density Concrete sandwiched between 1″ thick steel plates; Ceiling of Cells made of (4) four 2″ thick steel plates stacked
  • This Hot Cell is the largest in Canada providing research space for the nuclear industry to study radioactive (Hot) material
  • (5) Five lead shielded windows with (5) five sets of manipulators provide control for the researchers
  • Upgraded 7.5 tonne overhead crane
  • Mechanical and Electrical systems to accommodate high definition electromagnetic microscopes
  • Project was completed in an occupied facility and confined space, making it particularly complex
  • The Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) Shielded Facility is a nuclear materials facility for material development, testing, and analysis to be used to probe the mechanical behaviour of existing and newly developed materials (including in-reactor core components and Gen IV technology), and to conduct isotope research
